Reflection Questions for "The Gospel and Personal Evangelism"

Reflection questions for Chapter 4: How Should we Evangelize?
1. On page 55 and following Dever asserts that we must be honest, sharing the negative part of the truth (that we are sinners and we need to repent) even though it is difficult. What fears do you have about sharing this part of the gospel?
2. On page 57 and following Dever argues that we must "emphasize the urgency with which people ought to repent and believe if they will be saved." Do you agree with this assessment? Do you feel an urgency to share the gospel around your non-Christian friends?
3. On page 59 and following Dever also says we need joy in our evangelism. Do you feel joy in your understanding of the gospel? How can we cultivate the joy in our own relationships with Christ so we can greater express it to others?

Reflection questions for Chapter 3: Who Should Evangelize?

1. On page 46 Dever asks, "Is the ordinary Christian doing evangelism like the ordinary employee trying to do the company's accounting?" -Do you ever feel this way?
2. What about evangelism is intimidating to you?
3. If you could receive training for evangelism, what would you hope to learn?

Reflection questions for Chapter 2: What is the Gospel?

  1. On page 32 Dever states, “That which passes for the gospel too often becomes a very thin veneer spread lightly over our culture's values, becoming shaped and formed to its contours rather than to the truth about God.” Do you agree with him? If so, in what ways have you seen the Gospel get misconstrued? In what ways might you be tempted to shift the message of the Gospel to reflect your own values or priorities?
  2. On page 33 (and elsewhere) Dever asserts that sin is a necessary component of the Gospel. Is it easy or difficult to talk about sin with non-believers? Why?
  3. On page 41-42 Dever has a discussion about repentance and its importance in responding to the Gospel. How have you repented of things in the past? What does repentance look like for you today? How can you use those experiences to relate to others when they find out they must also repent to be a believer?
  4. On page 43 Dever gives his version of the Gospel presentation. How does it match Paul's messages in Acts 13 and Acts 17? How does it match yours? What about it do you like? What would you change?
